UK ancestry

You can apply for a UK Ancestry visa if all the following apply:

  • You can prove one of your grandparents was born in the UK.
  • You are able and planning to work in the UK.
  • You are a commonwealth citizen.
  • You are 17 years old or older.
  • You have enough money to support yourself without help from public funds.

You can claim ancestry if:

  • you or your parent were adopted.
  • your parents or grandparents were not married.

You cannot claim UK ancestry through step-parents.

Documents you need to provide

  • A current passport
  • Your full birth certificate.
  • Your grandparent’s full birth certificate
  • Evidence you are planning to work in the UK.
  • Evidence such as bank statements to prove you can support yourself.

DO

  • Make sure you have all the correct evidence.
  • Check if you need a Tuberculosis test result certificate.

DON’T

  • Do not underestimate the complexity of this application.
  • Do not forget to prepare the correct evidence you need.
  • Do not forget a detailed cover letter to accompany your application.
