You can apply for this visa if you are between the ages of 4 and 17 and you wish to study at an independent school in the UK.

In order to be eligible, you must demonstrate the following:

  1. You will have access to enough money to support you in the UK and pay for your course.
  2. You have an unconditional offer for a place on a course at an independent school.
  3. You have the consent of your parent to study in the UK.

When you should apply for this visa depends on whether you’re applying from inside or outside of the UK.

Applying from inside the UK

The earliest you can apply is 3 months before your course starts. You will usually get a decision within 8 weeks. It costs £475 to extend or switch to a Child Student visa from inside the UK.

 

Applying from inside the UK

The earliest you can apply is 6 months before your course starts. You will usually get a decision within 3 weeks. It costs £348 to apply for a Child Student visa from outside the UK.
The duration you can stay in the UK depends on your age on the date you apply. If you are under 16 years old when you apply, you can stay for the duration of your course length (up to 6 years) plus 4 months afterwards. If you are between 16 – 17 years old, you can stay for the duration of your course length (up to 3 years) plus 4 months afterwards.
